WTHWWT- Week 8 (Nathan)

Me thinking the Cowgirls would lose.

Me thinking the Cowgirls would lose.

So, I’m seriously questioning what the hell I was thinking.

1. Picking and starting the 49ers’ players for my fantasy team? Fail

2. Thinking a team from Pennsylvania would actually do something to make me happy? Epic Fail

3. Thinking Dallas would lose again? Failtacular

New England Patriots 23 vs. St. Louis Rams 16
– Just when times were getting good for the Rams, the NFL declined the contract of Jim Haslett, stating that it was an illegal contract due to the agreement on Haslett winning 6 games, and then the Rams had to travel to New England, which is never a good thing (just ask Peyton Manning).  The Patriots won another game without Tom Brady and without a dominant rushing performance by anyone. Matt Cassel had two interceptions, and yet still led his team to a victory. Maybe he is that good… Maybe!

Dallas Cowgirls 13 vs. Tampa Bay Bucs 9 – So I pick Dallas and they lose. I pick against them and I lose. Brad Johnson led his team to victory and the Buccaneers just couldn’t get anything going. Maybe next week I won’t pick the Cowgirl game.

Reactions from Cowgirls players were positive after the W

Reactions from Cowgirls players were positive after the W

Miami Dolphins 25 vs. Buffalo Bills 16 – Chad Pennington threw for over 300 yards and the Dolphins withstood the offense of the Buffalo Bills, and survived to win. The Bills, maybe looking overlooking these next few games due to the easy schedule, just could not get any rushing going, and Trent Edwards is not proven enough yet to lead his team by just throwing the ball. Congrats Dick Jauron getting a contract extension. Well Deserved!

Cleveland Browns 23 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars 17 – HEY LOOK THE BROWNS WON A GAME!!! I guess the state of Ohio has something to cheer about after The Ohio State Buckeyes lost and watched their National Championship chances implode right in front of their eyes! Congrats Joe Pa and Romeo Crennel.

Houston Texans 35 vs Cincinnati Bungals 6 – HELLO BENGALS… ARE YOU THERE? Its time you show up to give your opponents a game. You just let the Houston Texans walk all over you. I think its time for a change somewhere on the sidelines. When will y’all get sick of losing? Hopefully, its soon.

She isnt very happy with losing to Houston.

She isn't very happy with losing to Houston.

New York Giants 21 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers 14 – Who thought a long snapper would decide the game? Well, the Steelers lost their long snapper due to injury, and his replacement took the word “long” literally and hiked the ball over the punters head and that led to a safety which tied the game. Then Eli Manning led his team to their first and only TD of the game and the Giants D stopped Big Ben and the Steelers offense to clinch the game. This is the beginning of a very tough road for the Giants.. Thanks, Steelers. You let me down again!

Seattle Seahawks 34 vs. San Francisco 49ers 13 – A new coach, a new attitude, the same result. Another L in the loss column for the 49ers. Seattle, depleted by injuries, dominated from the beginning and never looked back. Hopefully Mike Holmgren goes out strong in his final games as head coach for the ‘Hawks.

P.S.: This was written before Ray!!! Nathan Wins!!!

WTHWWT – Week 5 (Nathan)

So, in a week where the MLB saw the Cubs and Angels get eliminated from the playoffs, and the NHL started another season, with two games over in Europe, there was another week full of upsets and surprises in the NFL. The stock market continues to hit rock bottom and the presidential candidates continue to tour the country in hopes of people’s votes. Wachovia was bought out by Wells Fargo, and the University of Michigan got blown out of the water by the Fighting Illini and Juice Williams. As society continues to go downhill, the thoughts of where this world will be one year from today is just scary and unpredictable. But when times turn rough, you can always count on these blogs to cheer you up.

Atlanta vs Green BayAaron Rodgers vs Matt Ryan. Both very young inexperienced, starting quarterbacks and Lambeau Field on the first weekend of October, it does not get any better than this. People were unsure of how Rodgers would play because of his shoulder injury, but in an attempt to beat Brett Favre’s record setting streak of continuous starts, Rodger suited up and played. In the end, Matt Ryan was the quarterback who was leaving the field as a winner. This is the third week in a row that I have had to write about the Packers which is not a good thing. Hopefully they get the team back on track on their way to Seattle to visit former head coach Mike Holmgren.

San Diego vs Miami – So as I should have done when picking my picks for the week, the Chargers will now be known as the Padres. Hopefully this will give them a reason to start winning… Miami once again surprised the league with another upset victory. The Miami Dolphins are the team that everyone is going to overlook this season. Expect the Dolphins to finish at least .500 this season. They are that good. Or that average. However you want to look at it.

Buffalo vs Arizona – If any Buffalo Bills fans thought that JP Losman was a good quarterback hopefully this week proved something to you. The only good thing JP is good for is riding the bench and maybe giving the plays to the quarterback. On his first drive, JP lost a fumble and the Cardinals subsequently scored on the following drive. Hopefully, Trent Edwards can heal up over the bye week and come back in two weeks and start at quarterback. Concussions are so unpredictable so I’m sure we won’t find out until next week whether he can play or not.

Pittsburgh vs Jacksonville – Once again, the Jaguars let me down. Their lack of a running game has imploded my fantasy teams all season long and until they find a decent tandem in the backfield, it’s going to be a long season for the Jags.  Jones-Drew and Taylor must pick it up for Jacksonville’s success. The Steelers are going to have another dominant year in their division and will end up making the playoffs once again.

So, as this will be my last blog before the NHL Season officially starts on Thursday, let me finish this by saying Go Wings… HEY HEY HOCKEYTOWN!

Execution Day II; WTHWWT – Week 5 (Ray)

This NFL season is turning out to be one of the weirdest I have ever seen. Teams keep blowing their 4th quarter leads, there is a new injury every week, and the teams that do win do not deserve to. Let me get started.

Tennessee 13 Baltimore 10

The Titans are the weakest 5-0 team I have seen in my life. They are not that good and are way overrated. Kerry Collins is nothing special and neither is their running game. Their defense is good but there is no way they should be 5-0 right now. The Ravens should have won this game, hands down. They let it slip away from them, when they had the Titans where they wanted them. I see the Titans as an average .500 team still, despite their record.

Atlanta 27 Green Bay 24

I hate Matt Ryan. Let me get that statement out of the way first. The Packers defense has reverted back to the old days of letting people score all over them. Al Harris’ injury has been big and Charles Woodson has not been 100% either. The Pack must get Ryan Grant more involved. As soon as they get behind, it is all put on Aaron Rodgers. Stick with Ryan Grant. It works when he gets the ball. The Packers are still 2-0 in the NFC North, which is important, but if they cannot beat teams like Tampa and Atlanta, I am going to have to start picking against them.

Indianapolis 31 Houston 27

I had this game picked! Sage Rosenfels decided he wanted to blow a 17 point lead with 5 freakin’ minutes left. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Houston has got to learn how to seal a deal. I realize they are winless but come on, every team needs to have some sort of victory escape plan. The Colts have cemented the fact that they are average. This win proves nothing about them, besides that they are terrible. Peyton looks mediocre, as does Addai. They better pick it up if they want to even MAKE the playoffs.

Washington 23 Philadelphia 17

I am not ready to concede that Washington is a good team. I just can’t seem to fit them in with the elite teams in the NFL (there really aren’t any though). The defense is pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Clinton Portis is a solid back, but can be fairly inconsistent. Jason Campbell is improving but when the big game comes around in December and January, I think he will crack. Get on me all you want Skins fans, your team is not as good as you think. It is all one, big mirage.

New England 30 San Francisco 21

This was a last minute change for me.  Woe is me for picking against Bill Bellicheck after a bye week, but what the hell?  I thought the 49ers could take advantage of being at home and they didn’t play poorly, they just turned the ball over too much – 3 INT.  The Patriots had the ball for almost 40 minutes, and that is why they won.  J.T. O’Sullivan is definitely a competent quarterback, but it is becoming clear to me that teams these days do not care as much about the run anymore.  Frank Gore only had 12 carries.  Frank is a very, very good back.  The Big Dawg’s gotta eat.  Give him the ball more San Francisco!

Minnesota 30 New Orleans 27

OK, evidentally I have some sort of NFC North curse where whoever I pick does the opposite.  The Saints deserved this win and they blew it.  Martin Gramatica blew it.  Fire him right now.  He is garbage beyond belief.  Sign Morten Anderson.  Gramatica sucks.  Reggie Bush had two punt return touchdowns and Brees had over 300+ yards passing.  The defense played well.  But the Saints decide to take so many penalties and have turnovers galore.  Adrian Peterson was invisible.  This is all on Gramatica.  The NFL’s worst kicker.

WTHWWT – Week 4 (Nathan)

It’s time for change. Instead of starting out complaining about how often the teams I want to win actually lose, and vice versa, I’m going to start out on a decent note. After burying his infant child on Saturday afternoon in Texas, Matt Bryant, kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, converted 3 field goals and led his team to victory. Just being in the game was a victory for Bryant, but kicking his team to a victory was just a miracle. Any guy who can have that much courage and just be in the state of mind to do his job a day after burying a family member, especially one whose life was cut way to short, is remarkable. And even though he defeated my team, he still deserves some props. To all the Bryant family, sorry for the loss.. From Both of us who write these blogs, our hearts and prayers are with you.

And now time to write about my mistakes.

Green Bay 20 Tampay Bay 31 – Is it me or do the Packers always have a tough time playing in Tampa Bay? Aaron Rodgers and Brian Griese both threw three interceptions, but the key to the game was Rodgers self-proclaimed separated shoulder. Tests are being done today on his shoulder, but until the results come back, the Packers season is in limbo(Upgraded to shoulder sprain). Matt Flynn, who beat out Brian Brohm during the preseason, is their second string quarterback, and with his lack of experience, the Packers may be in trouble. The Packers play the young and upcoming Vickless (still funny) Falcons next week in Green Bay. Dealing with the loss of a family members, the Bucs played like they had a chip on their shoulder, and with the help of Matt Bryant and his son, who was watching the game from up above, the Bucs finished on top. The Packers are now on a 2 game losing streak heading into a week full of questions and concerns.

Arizona 35 vs New York Jets 56 – I guess Brett Favre’s ankle is fully healed, and not to mention his shoulder. Brett Favre tapped into the record books again yesterday by leading his team to 34 points in the second quarter. Brett Favre picked apart the Arizona Cardinals defense, who decided they were going to play a soft zone defense, for 6 touchdowns and close to 300 yards. Anyone who doubted his ability, owes Brett Favre and for goodness sakes Deanna as well, an apology. If the Jets allow Favre to play like he did this week, then they surely will be fighting the Bills for top spot in the AFC East. And as an avid supporter of Brett, I’m proud to still own my Favre 4 President 08 shirt!

Dallas 24 vs Washington 26 – Once again, TO has the chance to prove himself and what does he do… EPIC FAIL! Over one-third of the plays Dallas did on Sunday were directed towards TO and what did he do…not a damn thing. Its a shame that someone that cocky and ignorant can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk. Oh yea, not to mention, he was still upset because not all the plays went to him. What a punk! Oh yeah Redskins, Good Game. Way to show the NFC East that you are back in it… for now.

Philadelphia 20 vs. Chicago 24 – Wow! The Bears actually did something productive. They actually beat someone who is “good”. Yeas, the Eagles were without their RB but they still have Donovan McNabb and he’s good enough by himself to beat the Bears, on most nights. The NFC North is going to be a tough division this year, minus the Lions that is. The Bears, Packers, and Vikings all have a chance to win the division… Keep your eyes out on this division!!!

I think it’s the appropriate time to say a fond farewell to a great friend and horrible human being. In six years, this fellow did absolutely nothing for the NFL and it’s most definitely a good thing that he has been axed! Times can’t get any worse for the team that he drove right into the ground. Thanks Matt for all you have done, and lack thereof.

Matt Millen- Finally Gone!!!

Have a good week everyone…

WTHWWT – Week 4 (Ray)

Starting this week’s version, I want to say that I hope Aaron Rodgers is OK, and able to continue. I learned that Denver doesn’t know how to beat weak teams, and that my theory on the overrated Cowboys came true. Yet, the experts are completely shocked they lost? Unbelievable. Someone hold another Inquisition and execute all these dunces. They are polluting the airwaves more than the Paris Hilton sex tape. I also learned that Chicago must hate me, because every time I pick them to win or lose they do the opposite. I handed that game over to Nathan though. It’s exhausting writing about Chicago. I feel sorry for their beat writers. Scott Linehan is the first coach to get beheaded in the season. The Rams fired him this morning. Jim Haslett will take over as interim coach. Enjoy that crapshoot Jim. Anyway, let’s get on with it, shall we?

Kansas City 33 Denver 19

What the hell happened Broncos? You rolled over and laid a giant, moldy egg – the kind Fear Factor used to feed people. Beat the teams you are supposed to. At least my main man Eddie Royal did good with 9 catches and 104 yards (excluding his fumble). Jay Cutler did not look like himself. He threw 49 times; way too much in that offense. I realize that they were behind a lot of the time but, you must establish the run game a little bit. Set up play action. I sincerely hope, Kansas City fans don’t think you guys have it together now. You don’t. Your team is not going anywhere. This was a “Thank you for watching us even though we’re not good” gift. Don’t expect anymore of it. Herm Edwards needs to be fired and you know it. Where is Dick Vermeil? Maybe he can cry you guys into the playoffs. I kid. I like Vermeil. Anyways Denver, do not do this again. I thought you were the best team in the NFL before Sunday. So much for that…

New Orleans 31 San Francisco 17

I changed this pick Saturday night, along with a few others. This game was probably the hardest to figure out. San Francisco seems capable of winning but they are still somewhat confusing. The Saints are the same way. J.T. O’Sullivan was finally brought back to the planet in this game with a 59.6 QB rating. Frank Gore did OK but he needed his QB to help out. Drew Brees was the same guy he should be throwing 3 TD’s. I really don’t think this game helped out in telling me how good these teams are. I do know that whoever said J.T. O’Sullivan was going to be the next Kurt Warner “come out of nowhere” type player, they were sorely mistaken.

Tennessee 30 Minnesota 17

OK, Tennessee should not be 4-0 right now. They are really not very good. The defense does everything. The offense is just barely competent enough. Minnesota is the exact same way yet they are 1-3? It does not make sense to me. Both had running QBs that are now replaced by old veterans. The Vikings have the better RB in Peterson. It just doesn’t add up. I am not sold on the Titans and probably will never be this season. I may be in the minority, but I feel if they were to face a really good team, they would fold over faster than Ohio State in BCS championship games or against the SEC. Call me what you want, but the Titans are not good. They will make the playoffs, sure, but will make an early exit. I won’t even say anything else about Minnesota besides that they should trade AP to the Packers.

Tampa Bay 30 Green Bay 21

This was the first game where Aaron Rodgers didn’t play very well throwing 3 INT. I wanted to see how he would respond in the second half, which wasn’t very well. He did get injured, though, and for some reason Matt Flynn came in. Brian Brohm should be the second string, not Mr. One Time LSU Wonder. Also, one of my fears is coming true – Ryan Grant was a fluke last year. He just does not look the same this year. Running backs in this day and age are not doing well. There is not a consistent runner anymore. LT can’t even give us 100 yard games that much. The Packers put up an amazing 28 yards rushing for the game. Ouch. That stat speaks for itself. The GB defense did a good job of creating turnovers but the offense couldn’t help out. This game was really important because this was a loss to an average team. People expected the Packers to lose to Dallas but not to Tampa Bay. They need to regroup, hope Rodgers is healthy, come up with a new run strategy and take care of Atlanta next week by 21. Thoughts and prayers go out to Matt Bryant of the Bucs; playing Sunday after losing your child took a lot of heart.

Pittsburgh 23 Baltimore 20

Pittsburgh is not that good. Baltimore is by far the better team. Roethlisberger is garbage and will always be garbage. Flacco is the man. That is all I have to say about this game.

What the Hell Were We Thinking (Week 3, Nathan)… and the Ryder Cup Recap!

Dallas 27 Green Bay 16

So, for the first time ever the Dallas Cowboys beat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. It’s upsetting but somewhat expected. Mason Crosby, the best kicker in the game right now (especially since he is on my fantasy team.. sorry Ray) had 3 good field goals which helped me win my match-up in fantasy. I love when kickers can contribute to a winning team. (I am going to leave Tony Romo and Terrell “I’m a baby” Owens out of this blog. Thats because they are simply talked about too much. Until they win a Super Bowl, until they prove themselves worthy of my time, you won’t hear me say a word about them after this… ) The Packers are still the best team in the NFC North and will be back in the playoffs once again. Go get ’em boys!!!

Minnesota 20 Carolina 10

Wow! The Minnesota Vikings actually won a game. I guess Gus Frerotte can still lead a team to victory. The Panthers had won both games this season in the fourth quarter. Well, the Vikings did not even give them a chance to do that again. The Vikings looked like a good team. If this keeps up, they have a chance of challenging the Packers for the division.

Jacksonville 23 Indianapolis 21

A new stadium… Peyton Manning… and a Sunday Afternoon. What do you usually get? Usually its a Indianapolis Colts victory. But not this season. So far in the new stadium, they are 0-2 and have yet to take advantage of Tom Brady’s injury. They were supposed to be the second best team in the AFC and when Brady went down, that shot them straight up to the top of the League. Well so far, it looks like they need to go back to their old stomping grounds. Baltimore! Just kidding.

Miami 38 New England 13

For the first time in over a year, the New England Patriots have lost a regular season game. Joey Porter of the Miami Dolphins talked the talk, and he definitely walked the walk. The Patriots looked like they had no clue what they were doing out on the field. Matt Cassel spent more time on his back than a cheap hooker. (no offense… and no hate mail from ‘the corner’). Bill Parcells has made the Dolphins into a good team; not quite great but a good team. It was actually fun watching the Dolphins for the first time in a long time.

And now onto the most exciting thing that happened this weekend:

RYDER CUP RECAP

In Kentucky, Kenny Perry and the United States Ryder Cup Team brought home the trophy. For the first time in years, the Men beat the Boys from across the pond, in the 37th Ryder Cup.

While watching the Ryder Cup, I almost felt like I was watching a hockey game. The fans were chanting, the crowds were loud, and it was a blast to watch. When Jim Furyk’s championship clinching putt was conceded, I could not help but chant “USA, USA, USA!!!!!.”

While Phil Mickelson choked once again, Anthony Kim and Boo Weekly dazzled us Americans. The best part of this weekend was to see Paul Azinger, the captain of the American’s, riding around on his golf course doing “victory laps” and the fans chanting “BOO!!!!” after each and every amazing shot by fellow American, Boo Weekly. It was good to see the men having fun and celebrating a victory.

What the Hell Were We Thinking (Week 3, Ray)

After suffering last night’s Packer defeat, I am a little feeble today. I will get to that later. It was a sloppy game actually so I still can’t see why people are claiming the Cowboys proved they are the best. No, they did not. Anyways, I might be a little less relentless than last week but let’s get started.

Tampa Bay 27 Chicago 24

Again you do this to me Chicago. Why? You blow another lead with less than 10 seconds left. You made Brian Griese throw 67 passes, picked him off 3 times and still lost. How is that possible? Well, you were 4/15 on 3rd downs. That is hideous. You must keep the ball in situations like that and not continuously give it up. You still won the possession battle though, which is surprising. Kyle Orton was competent enough for the victory again. Speaking of Orton, I seriously hope everyone realizes that he is definitely the QB of this team. He is doing quite well for the Bears, and they could easily be 3-0. Let’s prevent the Gex Rossman talk (don’t want to jinx anything). Hire Rollie Fingers for some closing tips. You need them.

Miami 38 New England 13

According to my sources, this is not a September Fool’s joke much to the chigrin of Pats fans. Wow. Your team got destroyed by Ronnie Brown. He alone put up 5 touchdowns on you. Go sit in the corner Patriots defense. You do not allow one person to do that; this is what halftime adjustments are for. Matt Cassel was Matt Cassel, average and there was no running game (Maroney was injured). This team must be about the defense if they want to make the playoffs. This loss has shown the entire NFL that now is the time to crush the Patriots. This could very well be the start of a losing streak for New England, and maybe a winning streak for Miami lasting more than 1 game.

Seattle 37 St. Louis 13

The only thing I have to say about this pick is “Whoops!” I figured the Rams could surprise a struggling Seahawk team. This was Julius Jones’ game with some additional support from T.J. Duckett. They combined for 219 yards and 3 TD. Let me use this platform to tell everyone that Steven Jackson is the new Larry Johnson. He had a great year or two but now he is now is an all-carries no yards back. He had a 2.9 yard per rush average yesterday. I don’t think it will get any better for him this year. As for Seattle, I do not think this win does anything for their chances. They are still an average team that should lose to Arizona. Let’s move on to avoid more embarassment.

Baltimore 28 Cleveland 10

What’s the sound? That chant? Bra-dy Quinn! Bra-dy Quinn! OK Cleveland, do you really think you have a chance at making the playoffs this year after Derek Anderson’s 22.9 QB rating performance? You’re kidding yourself if you say yes. Brady Quinn may not have started a game but I guarantee he gives you a better chance to win the Anderson. However, Romeo Crennel is going to hold onto Derek as long as he possibly can. Give it up Romeo, your fired after this season anyway. Mark it down. Wait a minute! Breaking news! As I am writing this I read that Crennel says Brady Quinn will get a “few more reps.” Maybe there is hope for the team now. Watch for each QB to play a half this week.

Dallas 27 Green Bay 16

I will tell everyone right now why the Pack lost: the offensive line. It was a bad performance by them. Aaron Rodgers was constantly under pressure and wasn’t able to set his feet for throws. Even so, Rodgers still put in a solid game. He played well in his first big game. Injuries did not help the Pack either. Center Scott Wells was out along with safety Atari Bigby, and CB Charles Woodson was playing injured. Both teams were dreadful in the red zone combining to go 2-8 within the 20. One key thing the Packers did not do was play action. They did try to get the run going but they would never try to go play action, over-the-top. I have no idea why. You need to do that against an aggressive Dallas defense. That was disappointing. Tony Romo did not look very good at all. Green Bay shut him completely down, constantly pressuring him. Terrell Owens was lost in the game too. Marion Barber is why they won the game. Green Bay shut down Romo and the receivers (except Miles Austin), but left it open for Barber. This game only proves that these teams are very evenly matched, NOT that Dallas is overwhelmingly the best team in the league as some ESPN ‘experts’ want to tell you. It is a Cowboy lovefest over there, I swear. We don’t even know if they are the best team in the division let alone the NFL! The Pack will be fine. They know what they have to do to get better. Go to Tampa and take care of business.

San Diego 48 New York Jets 29

These two teams are quite possibly the biggest engimas since Michael Jackson’s nose. San Diego can look brilliant, like last night, then look like the 0-14 Buccaneers another. As for the Jets, Farve is doing what he can but things are not the same after leaving his great supporting cast in Green Bay. One thing I have seen that really ticks me off is this article by NFL columnist Vic Carucci. He proclaims Brett Favre’s future is done! Oh no! On a night where he threw more TD then INT (granted it was late in the game), his New York career is apparently over. After the first game of the season against Miami, everyone is saying ‘Favre is back! He is the same ol’ Favre.’ When are these columnist going to grow some kahones and stick with a prediction throughout the year. Stop flip flopping like John Kerry after every week and actually review what happened in the game. Stop making outlandish statements that are begging to be disproven next week. It is unfortunate that more columnists and ‘experts’ are doing this. The Jets defense certainly didn’t do anything to help almost allowing half a hundred points. Thomas Jones only ran the ball 10 times. Even though you’re behind, you cannot keep throwing the ball in the first half. Make room for play action. Favre will be fine. If he puts up a 4 TD 0 INT game next week, I better not see columns popping up proclaiming Favre as leading the Jets to the Super Bowl. These ‘experienced’ columnists need to stop writing for the public debate and actually write about the game
